Takhar, Afghanistan – The story of a woman named Zofnon Sarwari, who has played a significant role as a social mobilizer in polio vaccination campaigns, is widely shared in Taloqan city, the capital of Takhar province. Through her dedication and commitment, she has been instrumental in immunizing children against polio.

Zofnon Sarwari, a 23-year-old resident of Taloqan, graduated in 2019 from the Faculty of Dari Literature at Takhar State University. For the past year, she has worked as a social mobilizer in polio vaccination campaigns. Her area of responsibility includes the first, second, and third streets of the old hospital in Taloqan city.

Family Life and Support for Activities

Zofnon married in 2018 and is the mother of two children, four-year-old Fatima and five-year-old Elham. Her husband, Faridun Sarwari, works as a social worker at a 40-bed center for treating drug addicts in Takhar province. Zofnon lives in an educated family that encourages her in social activities.

Commitment to Children’s Health

Driven by her love and compassion for children, Zofnon joined the polio vaccination campaigns to raise awareness among families about the importance and benefits of the polio vaccine. In a community where polio spreads easily due to low literacy rates and lack of awareness, Zofnon’s role is invaluable. She persuades families in simple and understandable language that the polio vaccine protects children from paralysis.

Behavior Change and Increased Awareness

Zofnon works in a society where many families are still unaware of the value of vaccines or avoid them due to misconceptions and misinformation. With encouragement and support from her husband’s family, she has managed to continue her activities and she has been able to convince many uninformed families through house-to-house visits that the polio vaccine is essential for their children’s health.

Notable Results and Social Impact

Zofnon Sarwari’s tireless efforts have had significant results. She has been able to change the negative mindset about vaccination by providing accurate and scientific information. Using simple and understandable language is one of the strategies that effectively delivers her message to the people. Visiting households and educating parents in plain language has led to a change in people’s attitudes and thoughts toward polio vaccination.

Positive Impact on Society

Seeing Zofnon’s dedication and efforts, many parents have understood the importance of the polio vaccine and now they regularly vaccinate their children. Her actions have greatly contributed to the reduction of polio cases in the region. Despite the responsibilities of raising two children and managing her household, Zofnon has balanced her maternal duties with her voluntary activities. Her children, observing their mother’s efforts, have also learned important values such as commitment, sacrifice, and helping others.

Inspiration and a Bright Future

Zofnon’s efforts in the polio vaccination campaigns in Takhar have not only ensured children’s health but also brought hope and inspiration to the community. She urges families to cooperate with the volunteer teams for a polio-free Afghanistan.

Samira, a colleague of Zofnon, says, “Zofnon’s dedication and love for her work have deeply impacted our community. She has successfully changed negative attitudes towards vaccination by using simple and understandable language. Families who previously avoided vaccinating their children due to misconceptions now confidently vaccinate them.”
