A Glimpse of Hope in the Mountains: Mehrullah’s Efforts to Safeguard Children

Panjshir, Afghanistan — In the beautiful valleys of Shutul district in Panjshir province, where a river flows along one side and towering mountain peaks rise on the other, a young man carries out tireless service each day to protect the health of children.
This young man is Mehrullah Nadeem, someone whose determination has never been weakened by the region’s difficult terrain and rugged roads but has only grown stronger in his mission to secure a safer future for children.
He has spent many years working in polio and measles vaccination campaigns across the remote villages of this district, becoming a clear symbol of dedication, service, and trust for the people of the region.
Mehrullah is not just a vaccinator; he is an ambassador of commitment. Alongside polio, he plays an active role in measles campaigns and knows well the dangers these diseases pose. He makes a special effort to reach the families and villages that are often left without vaccines because of difficult and inaccessible roads.
“I know that our work is about saving children’s lives,” he says. “Every step we take means securing the future of a child.”
The Day That Changed the Direction of His Life
Behind Mehrullah’s work lies a deeper story.
“One day I went to a relative’s wedding,” he says. “There, I noticed a ten-year-old girl who could not walk on her own. She moved with difficulty, leaning on others for every step. I was told that she had been infected with polio when she was very young. What I felt in that moment was not just sadness — it was the turning point of my life. Right then and there, I made a promise to myself that I would never allow another child to suffer the same fate.”
From that day on, Mehrullah chose this path of service and began his fight to secure a safer future for children.

Challenges: From Mountains to Misconceptions
Shutul is a mountainous area with difficult roads and harsh seasons. But Mehrullah says that none of these have ever stood in the way of his work.
“It isn’t easy working in remote areas. We walk long stretches between the mountains and cross through rivers, but sometimes it’s the doubts and misconceptions of people that slow our efforts. Some families believe the vaccine is harmful.”
But Mehrullah possesses patience, perseverance, and the ability to build trust. “I explain the benefits of the vaccine to parents calmly and patiently, ” he says. “If even one family is convinced, I feel I’ve made a meaningful difference.”
Successes: When Efforts Bear Fruit
Mehrullah says that seeing the results of his efforts makes every hardship worthwhile.
He recalls the story of Sharif Ahmad’s family as an example: “At first, they were very doubtful and didn’t want their children vaccinated. I spoke with them for several days and showed them the evidence. In the end, they were convinced and had their children vaccinated. When they thanked me, I saw that my efforts had not been in vain.”
As a result of his efforts, vaccination coverage in Shutul district has increased, and families now understand the importance of vaccines more clearly than ever before.

Community Support: Expanding the Circle of Change
Mehrullah’s impact has not been limited to vaccinating children. Families in the area now place strong trust in him, health workers support his efforts, and the messages he shares are being passed from one household to another.
“Families who once had doubts are now advocates of vaccination themselves, encouraging their neighbors to do the same — that is a true sign of change.”
Mehrullah hopes to extend his efforts to other remote areas as well, so that no child is deprived of the right to vaccination.
Conclusion: The Power of Commitment
Mehrullah Nadeem is one of those whose genuine commitment serves as a force for his community’s wellbeing.
His efforts, his perseverance in the face of challenges, his ability to convince families, and his tireless struggle to protect children’s lives all give us an important message: “If a person has determination, they can change the life of an entire community.”
Mehrullah’s story shows that every two drops of vaccine, every convinced family, and every healthy child is an important step toward building a safer Afghanistan.
