A Local Leader’s Effective Efforts to Protect Children from Polio
Takhar, Afghanistan – As autumn arrives in Takhar, the yellow and orange leaves of the trees blanket the ground like a carpet, and the cold winds revive memories of days gone by.
In the stone-paved streets of Taloqan city, an elderly man dressed in traditional attire walks calmly. His presence exudes dignity and respect, presenting a warm image amidst the cold season as if the beauty of autumn has found its embodiment in him.
This is 70-year-old Haji Kamal, a respected local leader of Taloqan city, who has lived here for years with his children and grandchildren.
However, this year holds a new meaning for him, signifying a stand and fight against a dangerous disease that can paralyze and even kill children.
This year, Haji Kamal is not just a father and grandfather; he has taken on the responsibility of raising public awareness about the dangers of polio and supporting vaccination campaigns against the disease.
A Motivation Rooted in Family
Haji Kamal steps out of his home deep in thought, heading towards the gathering point of polio vaccination campaign volunteers. Along the way, he recalls the incident that changed the course of his life.
Last year, his grandson fell seriously ill. When they took him to the hospital for treatment, the doctors diagnosed him with measles. They explained that if he had received all his childhood vaccinations, he wouldn’t have contracted this severe disease.
This incident made Haji Kamal realize the importance of vaccines. From that day onward, he resolved to raise awareness about their value among others.
It has been a year since Haji Kamal not only began actively supporting polio vaccination campaigns but also started educating families about the importance of vaccines. He understands that the children in the country are at a higher risk of contracting the incurable polio disease compared to other infectious diseases.

A Local Leader’s Simple Yet Impactful Message
Haji Kamal, held in high esteem as a community leader, not only explains the importance of vaccinations during various gatherings and meetings but also actively participates in every polio vaccination campaign. He moves from mosque to mosque and site to site, encouraging families to vaccinate their children against polio.
The day before the polio vaccination campaign began, he spoke in a village gathering, saying: “Decades ago, we didn’t have the vaccination facilities we have now. People lived in constant fear of losing their children to diseases. But now, people across the country have access to vaccines. We must take advantage of this opportunity and vaccinate our children against all diseases, including polio, to ensure their future is safe and healthy.”
So far, Haji Kamal has encouraged dozens of families in his area to vaccinate their children.
New Advocates Alongside Leaders
Lina Hamdard, a young and energetic woman, has been working in polio vaccination campaigns for about a year.
Sharing her experiences, she says: “Our work is not easy. Sometimes families are skeptical; but when they see tribal leaders supporting us, they gain confidence.”
“Since Haji Kamal joined our team, there has been a significant shift in people’s perspectives. No one brings up old doubts anymore because when Haji Kamal himself steps forward to support vaccinations, other families confidently follow suit and vaccinate their children,” she adds.

The Community’s Support of Leaders
Sharifa, a local resident and mother of several children, shares her thoughts on polio vaccination: “At first, I was hesitant, but when Haji Kamal said that it was essential for children’s health, I felt reassured.”
Now, she confidently vaccinates her children and observes the positive impact it has on their health.
Sharifa highlights the role of local leaders in changing public opinion, stating: “We trust our leaders. When they advise us to vaccinate our children, we follow their recommendations.”
A Message of Hope and Unity
Haji Kamal delivers a straightforward message with every step he takes toward vaccination efforts: “Do not let any child miss out on vaccination for the sake of their healthy future. Vaccination is the step that prevents great harm. If we have this great opportunity today, why not use it to secure the health of the next generation?”
This simple yet powerful message brings hope not only to the people of Takhar but also to every mother concerned about her child’s health.
The presence of Haji Kamal and other leaders like him inspires vaccinators and the community to continue their efforts and work together for a future free from diseases and disabilities.
