Field Stories

Kabul, Afghanistan – Mohammad Zaheer, a 34-year-old resident of Mir Bacha Kot district in Kabul, is a well-known figure to many in his community. Despite facing numerous challenges in his own life, he has now emerged as a hero in the fight against polio in his area.

But What Led Him to This Path?

Facing Responsibility

Mohammad Zaheer grew up in a modest yet compassionate family. Due to financial hardships, he was unable to pursue higher education but bore a profound sense of responsibility from an early age.

One day, during a vaccination campaign in his village, he learned how polio could permanently affect a child’s life. This realization was a wake-up call for him—one that sparked a desire for change.

“When I learned that every drop of the polio vaccine could save a child’s life, I decided to dedicate my life to this cause. I didn’t want any child to suffer like some families had in the past because of this disease,” Zaheer said with hopeful eyes.

Eventually, Mohammad Zaheer began his work as a volunteer in polio vaccination campaigns. However, this path was fraught with challenges. Many families refused to vaccinate their children due to misinformation and unfounded beliefs.

During one campaign, he encountered a mother who was unwilling to have her children vaccinated. Influenced by misconceptions, the woman believed that the polio vaccine would harm her children. Yet, Zaheer did not give up. With patience and calm, he explained the dangers of polio and the importance of the vaccine. Ultimately, the woman changed her mind and had her children vaccinated.

Recalling this experience with a smile, Zaheer said, “That moment was a great victory for me. It made me realize how powerful awareness can be.”

Becoming a Hero

Zaheer’s success did not end with this single incident. He went on to raise awareness among more than 200 families, encouraging them to vaccinate their children.

Today, he is not just a vaccinator but a symbol of hope and change in his community.

“Vaccinating children is not just a job for me; it is a moral and humanitarian duty. Every day I go out for the campaign, I feel as if I am taking a step toward saving future generations,” he says.

An Inspiring Message

Mohammad Zaheer firmly believes that through collective efforts, a brighter future can be created for children.

His message is clear and encouraging: “Vaccination is the only tool that can protect our children from polio. Let’s unite and take this great responsibility seriously.”

Mohammad Zaheer’s story is not just about an individual—it is a tale of commitment, sacrifice, and transformation. Through his efforts, he has not only saved the lives of countless children but has also shown his community that even in the face of great challenges, hope and determination can prevail.
